Taxi driver who raped two passengers also convicted of raping a young girl (7)

A Dublin taxi driver who was recently convicted of raping two female passengers is also awaiting sentencing for the rape of a seven-year-old girl over ten years ago.

Raymond Shorten, 50, of Melrose Crescent in Clondalkin, was found guilty earlier this year but his name has not been released.

The court heard that Raymond Shorten knew the young girl’s family and raped her for the first time just days after her mother’s death.

On another occasion, he raped her when she was also only seven or eight years old, and that same year he sexually abused her in his car.

When police contacted him, he said he thought it was a “hoax.”

He denied any wrongdoing and accused her of lying, but was found guilty on all counts earlier this year.

In her victim impact statement, the survivor described that she was too young at the time to understand what was happening and that it was only during sex education classes at school that she realized that what he had done to her was wrong.

Although the trial was nerve-wracking, she said, she found some closure with the conviction.

Shorten will be sentenced for the rape of the girl on the 19th of this month.

Just three days later, he was convicted of raping two female passengers in his taxi two years ago.
