Man from Waterville dies in accident in Sangerfield on Sunday

SANGERFIELD, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — According to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office, a Waterville man has died after a crash on Route 20 in the town of Sangerfield.

On Sunday, July 7, officers were called to Route 20 in Sangerfield around 11 p.m. for the single-vehicle crash. Further investigation revealed that the driver of the vehicle – 45-year-old David Rice of Waterville – was traveling westbound on Route 20 when he left the road on the southbound side.


Rice’s vehicle then drove into a cornfield and came to a stop.

According to sheriffs, Rice suffered a medical incident that caused his car to leave the road. He was taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica, where he was pronounced dead. Rice’s passenger – 67-year-old Joanne Rice of Waterville – was not injured in the incident.

The Oneida County Sheriff’s Department was assisted at the scene by the Waterville and Oriskany Falls fire departments, the Central Oneida County Volunteer Rescue Corps, Mercy Flight and Kolor Khromatics Towing of West Winfield.
