When officers arrived, they found the 15-year-old outside the hospital in a van suffering from an apparent gunshot wound, police said. Hospital staff pronounced the teen dead. Investigators believe a 14-year-old had a gun in the car and that the gun was fired, striking the 15-year-old victim. “We were able to interview those involved,” said BPD Officer Truman Fitzgerald. “All of the juveniles were interviewed in the presence of their parents or guardians, and what we’ve found throughout the investigation leads us to believe this is not a homicide. It’s more likely that this is juveniles out early in the morning and someone mishandled a firearm and now we’ve lost a 15-year-old because of it.” Police said this happened when several juveniles were traveling together in a minivan, and all of the juveniles are believed to have been friends, with at least two of them related. An autopsy will determine the cause of death. The 14-year-old is being held in the Jefferson County Juvenile Detention Center at the direction of the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. A decision is pending on whether charges will be filed – or a motion, as it’s called in juvenile court. Stay up to date: The latest headlines and weather from WVTM 13. When investigators arrived on scene, they found evidence of the shooting and the gun in a bush.

Investigators believe that a 14-year-old had a gun in the car and that a shot was fired from the gun, hitting the 15-year-old victim.

“We were able to interview the people involved,” said Truman Fitzgerald, a BPD officer. “All of the juveniles were interviewed in the presence of their parents or guardians, and what we’ve found throughout the investigation leads us to believe this is not a homicide. It’s more likely that this is juveniles out early in the morning and someone mishandled a firearm, and now we’ve lost a 15-year-old because of it.”

According to police, this happened when several teenagers were traveling together in a minivan. All of the teenagers are believed to be friends, and at least two of them are related.

An autopsy is planned to determine the cause of death.

The 14-year-old is being held in the Jefferson County Juvenile Detention Center at the direction of the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office.

It is still uncertain whether charges will be brought or whether an application will be made, as is called in juvenile justice.
