Fatal car accident in Watertown claims one life

A passenger in one of the vehicles was killed in a two-car accident in Watertown.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol has released information on a fatal crash that occurred June 27. Preliminary information indicates that Micah Dietmeier, 21, the driver of a 2022 AGCO Terragotor sprayer, was turning left into a field from 455 Avenue around 10 a.m. when Carol McFarland, 87, the driver of a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox, attempted to pass him and collided with the sprayer. Neither driver was injured. A passenger in the Equinox, Delwin McFarland, 88, suffered serious, life-threatening injuries and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital. McFarland succumbed to his injuries on July 3.

Dietmeier and Carol McFarland were not injured. Both passengers of the Equinox were wearing seat belts.

The accident occurred 16 miles north of Watertown near 156th Street.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is investigating the accident. All information released so far is preliminary. The Highway Patrol is an agency of the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
