At least two dead and 19 injured in shooting at street festival in Detroit

At least two people were killed and at least 19 others injured in a shooting in Detroit, Michigan State Police said.

The shooting occurred early Sunday morning during a street festival in the east of the city.

Photos from the scene obtained by Scripps News Detroit show a three-block area cordoned off by police as their investigation continued into Sunday afternoon.

State police were assisted by Detroit Metropolitan Police, who were part of a homicide unit looking for clues to one or more suspects. Police said they did not immediately arrest a suspect.

A police spokesman said on Sunday evening that authorities would “implement a comprehensive new strategy regarding street parties” and “announce full details” by next week, when they would inform the public together with the city’s mayor.

Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield said in a statement: “I was saddened and deeply sickened to learn of the mass shooting early this morning on Detroit’s east side in which 21 young people, average age 19, were shot and two of them succumbed to their injuries.”

Sheffield said: “This unspeakable tragedy is another reminder that gun violence is an epidemic in Detroit and across the country. We must chart a new course of action, and I urge everyone to pitch in to put an end to the senseless killings and destruction of families in our community. My condolences and prayers go out to the victims and their loved ones.”
