Recently acquired Red Sox INF Zack Short traded to the Braves

The Red Sox have traded infielder Zack Short to the Atlanta Braves for cash, the two teams announced Thursday.

Short’s stay in Boston was short – 8 days to be exact – after he was traded from the Mets on May 1, also for cash. The 28-year-old was designated for assignment Wednesday, following a 5-0 loss at Atlanta.

Short’s farewell marks the Red Sox’s fifth trade since the start of the 2024 season, proving that this Boston team is wasting no time trying to climb the AL East ladder.

Short made two appearances for the Sox, going hitless with four strikeouts and 7 at-bats. He played in 10 games total to start the season in New York where he went 1-for-9.

Although Short’s time in Boston seemed like a fever dream, it provided few surprises. After Wednesday’s announcement that utilityman Romy González was returning from the injured list, Short’s status on the 26-man roster was called into question. Although he has added depth to an injury-plagued Red Sox team this season, Pablo Reyes’ decision to stay with Triple-A Worcester gives the team a more reliable option.

As for Atlanta, the Braves traded veteran Luis Guillorme to the Angels on Thursday, seemingly signaling the return of David Fletcher. Instead, they will give Short a chance first as they prepare for a three-game series against the Mets on Friday.

After two straight losses to the Braves, the Red Sox begin a three-game series against the Nationals on Friday at home. First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m.
