Is Aegon dead after Dance of Dragons?

Contains major spoilers

Um, is everyone OK? Because the last House of the Dragon The episode “A Dance of Dragons” blew us away. Criston Cole was on another power trip, Alicent gave her son the dressing down she should have given years ago, and of course there was that epic dragon fight that took Aegon, Aemond and Rhaenys into the skies and resulted in Rhaenys’ shocking death. Sorry, but I’m still not over it.

The one question that still haunts us, however (aside from what the hell just happened), is whether Aegon is even still alive. While we’d like to believe that Sunfire’s fall would have finished him off once and for all, securing Rhaenyra’s rightful place on the Iron Throne, we have a sneaking feeling that this isn’t the last we’ve seen of him.

Here’s what we know so far about Aegon’s fate.

Is Aegon dead after A Dance of Dragons?

In the epic battle of the fourth episode, Aegon thwarted his brother Aemond and Criston Cole’s plan to successfully conquer Rook’s Rest.

During the thrilling battle, Meleys attacked Sunfyre and Aegon, but it was Aemond’s call of “Dracarys” to Vhagar that incapacitated the pair and sent them flying away. The episode ended with Criston and Aemond approaching the scene of Sunfyre and Aegon to see if they had survived. However, the episode ended on a cliffhanger, with no confirmation of Aegon’s fate.

But all Aegon fans will be happy to hear that Aegon does indeed survive if the series follows the plot outlined in the books by George RR Martin on which the television series is based.

In Fire & BloodAegon survives the battle but is badly burned and broken, and Sunfyre is so badly damaged that she cannot be returned to King’s Landing. Aegon is returned to King’s Landing, and because he is so unwell, Aemond essentially takes over the government duties for the time being. Although this happens in the book, that doesn’t mean the HBO series will follow the plot exactly.

How does Aegon die?

Now that you know that Aegon (probably) survives the “Dance of Dragons” episode, you may be wondering when exactly does he die? Well, we have sad news for Rhaenyra fans: it’s going to be a long time. Read on to find out exactly how and when Aegon dies.

Warning, spoilers: After killing his half-sister Rhaenyra at Rosby with the help of sunfire, Aegon remained king, but not for long. At Rosby, Aegon’s men took Rhaenyra’s son Aegon III hostage to King’s Landing to ward off further threats.

Shortly after Rhaenyra’s death, her followers marched to King’s Landing, and Aegon had Aegon III’s ear cut off as a warning that with his death, Rhaenyra’s son and her bloodline would also die.

However, he never experienced the consequences of his warning, because shortly afterwards he was mysteriously poisoned with his glass of wine. It was never confirmed who poisoned him.

House of the Dragon is available to stream NOW.
