Man dies in ATV accident after hitting deer in Watauga Co.

BOONE, NC (WBTV) – A man was killed late Saturday night when he struck a deer while riding an ATV in Watauga County, according to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP).

NCSHP says they were called to a fatal crash on Briarwood Lane near Big Hill Road around 11 p.m.

According to the police report, a Suzuki ATV was traveling west on Briarwood Lane and struck a deer in the road. The driver then lost control and his ATV overturned.

38-year-old Carl Scott Norris was identified as the driver of the ATV. He was ejected from the vehicle and later died of his injuries at the scene.

According to NCSHP, Norris was not wearing a helmet.

Officials say Briarwood Lane Road was closed in the area for about two hours while the investigation was on scene. The initial investigation indicates that speed and alcohol were not contributing factors to the circumstances of the crash.
