The man was arrested after a local resident observed him in his backyard trying to enter the house through the back door, police said.

NEWTOWN, Connecticut – A man attempted to break into a Newtown home Sunday after leading police on a chase in a stolen vehicle, the city’s police department said.

Joao Gabril Almeida-bastos, 21, of Danbury, is charged with improper use of a marking, registration or license, reckless driving, police chase, improper turn/stop without using turn signal, operating a motor vehicle without a license, attempted burglary in the second degree, malicious damage to property in the first degree, unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, theft of a motor vehicle (first offense), malicious felony in the first degree and obstructing an officer/resisting.

At 11:37 a.m., police stopped a vehicle driven by Almeida-bastos on Toddy Hill Road. Police said as the officer exited his patrol car, Almeida-bastos made a U-turn and accelerated north on the road.

After the vehicle left the south shoulder of the road, it crashed at the intersection with Turkey Roost Road, according to police.

Almeida-bastos then got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. According to police, investigators learned the vehicle had been stolen several days earlier in Danbury.

Newtown police, along with Connecticut State Police and several police dogs, searched for Almeida-bastos in several neighborhoods, including Clearview Drive, Hitfield Road, Mile Hill Road South and South Main Street. Police said they also received calls from town residents who spotted him and provided his location and a description.

Almeida-bastos was arrested after a resident spotted him in their backyard at 2:52 p.m. trying to enter the house through the back door, police said. He was unsuccessful because the door was locked.

Police said Almeida-bastos was taken to the hospital for cuts he sustained while running through the woods and was being held on $100,000 bail. He is expected in Danbury Superior Court on Monday.
