Heat warning and air quality alert go into effect Monday in Lancaster County | Local news

A heat advisory and an air quality warning are in effect for Lancaster County on Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Monday from noon to 8 p.m. The service issues heat advisories when the heat index (the perceived temperature of the air) is expected to exceed 100 degrees.

High temperatures and humidity can cause heat-related illnesses, the service said. It recommends avoiding the sun, staying in air-conditioned rooms and drinking water. In addition, children and pets should never be left unattended in the car.

Other counties affected by the heat warning include Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lebanon, Perry and York.

Due to the air quality warning, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has imposed an orange air quality alert until midnight Monday.

Orange alerts are issued when air pollution could become harmful to sensitive groups such as children, the elderly and people with asthma, heart disease or other lung diseases. The service recommends avoiding strenuous outdoor activities and sports.

Other counties affected by the air quality warning include Dauphin, Lebanon, Cumberland and York.
