“Tea Time Hill” forest fire in Wharton State Forest is being investigated

TABERNACLE – Someone set off fireworks that burned 4,000 acres of land in a local national forest, authorities said.

According to the state forest fire service, the forest fire in Tea Time Hill is currently under investigation.

Firefighters battled extreme heat and flames and were able to contain 75 percent of the fire in Wharton State Forest by Sunday afternoon, a 3 p.m. update said.

The fire was discovered from an observation tower at around 9 a.m. on Friday, July 5.

Firefighting efforts involved ground crews and two helicopters, one for observation and the other with the ability to drop up to 1,200 litres of water.

The reaction took place during a heatwave in which temperatures rose to over 30 degrees and it felt even hotter due to the high humidity.

According to Sunday’s update, no injuries were reported and no buildings were threatened.

The fire raged near Apple Pie Hill and the Batona Campground, which was evacuated Friday.

No private homes were evacuated, the fire department said.

Wharton State Forest covers more than 110,000 acres in Burlington, Camden and Atlantic counties.
