Two dead and 17 injured in shooting at street festival in Detroit

Two people were killed and 17 others injured in a shooting at a street festival in Detroit early Sunday morning.

Detroit police reported that a gunman opened fire at a street festival on the city’s east side at 2:25 a.m., NBC affiliate WDIV reported. Michigan State Police also confirmed two fatalities in a statement posted on X on Sunday.

“The Michigan State Police are assisting Detroit Police in the investigation of a shooting as part of our partnership with the Homicide Task Force,” state police said.

According to state police, no suspect is currently in custody. No further details regarding the identity of a possible suspect have been released.

Detroit police said Sunday afternoon that investigators and crime scene investigators are “analyzing all available evidence.” Officials are expected to hold a press conference on Monday.

“DPD will implement a comprehensive new strategy regarding street festivals and will announce full details at a meeting with the police chief and mayor tomorrow,” police said.
