Two dead in Bay Area highway crashes on I-280 and I-580

A motorcyclist in Oakland and a car passenger in San Jose were killed in highway crashes over the weekend, the California Highway Patrol said.

The fatal crash in San Jose occurred at about 5:55 a.m. on Sunday. It involved a white sedan that spun out of control and crashed into a guardrail on southbound Interstate 280 at the McLaughlin Avenue exit, according to the CHP.

It was initially unclear whether the person was the driver or passenger. The police did not disclose why the car went out of control. The vehicle had significant damage to the front.

The Oakland motorcyclist became stuck in the second-to-last left lane on Interstate 580 eastbound at the 35th Avenue exit early Saturday. The first reports of the accident came in around 3:20 a.m.

The CHP issued a heavy traffic alert following the motorcycle crash, with all lanes closed. The alert remained in effect until about 6:35 a.m.

According to the CHP, both drivers died at the scene of the accident. Authorities were unable to determine the identities of the two on Sunday.
