Mass shooting at Detroit block party leaves two dead and 19 injured

Two people were killed and 19 injured in a mass shooting at a street festival in Detroit’s east side early Sunday morning. The 22-year-old suspected shooter, who is currently in police custody, also suffered a gunshot wound.

The suspect, whose identity was not disclosed, reportedly opened fire around 2:25 a.m. near Reno Street and Rossini Drive. According to Click on DetroitThe shooter was injured in the left leg in the incident.

Police have not yet identified the victims but told the newspaper that a 20-year-old woman died at the scene from a gunshot wound to the head. The other victim was a 21-year-old man who was pronounced dead at the hospital after being shot in the back.

One of the victims, a 17-year-old girl, is reportedly in critical condition. Thirteen others are in serious condition, while three are stable. According to police, all of Sunday’s victims were between 17 and 28 years old.

The shooting came amid a violent holiday weekend across the country. The summer months, especially around the Fourth of July, often see an increase in violence and mass shootings. Researchers say the reason for this is a combination of factors, including more social gatherings and higher alcohol consumption.

“The problem is the normality of these shootings. On January 1, the police will say crime has gone down, and then it will all start again. Funeral homes, hospitals and flower shops are the only ones who profit from crime in Detroit,” Detroit Police Commissioner Ricardo Moore was quoted as saying by Detroit News.
