Houston Texans Position Breakdown: Tight End

The Houston Texans tight end position was a very, very talented position group last year, and they added it again in the draft with Cade Stover. What their plan is for 2024, we may not know until we get to training camp, but it looks like they will play two close sets this upcoming season. As I mentioned before when drafting Stover, you don’t need four tight ends who can contribute. This would likely force you to cut an extra player at an important spot, such as on the offensive line. Houston could end up trading one and going heavy at the wide receiver position they’ve worked so hard on.

Depth chart

  1. Dalton Schultz
  2. Cade Stover
  3. Brévin Jordan
  4. Teagan Quitoriano
  5. Dalton Keene

They have plenty of depth there with Jordan and Quitoriano, both of whom were on the 53-man roster last season, although neither will likely make the roster this time around. This still leaves them with very good depth that they can rely on when needed. Honestly, no one expected the Texans to take a tight end, especially this early, given the success of the returning players last year. That said, good teams with very minimal holes can make luxury draft picks like this and give their franchise quarterback a familiar face to throw to.

We’ve all seen what the Stroud-Stover connection is capable of during their time together at Ohio State. Stover totaled 406 yards and five touchdowns on 36 receptions with Stroud at the helm. With five more regular season games they will be able to play, since college football is only 12 games, these stats should increase and we could see a very dominant Schultz/Stover duo in 2024. There is no reason why Dalton Schultz does not continue. the success he had last season, which means we could have another great duo that defenses should worry about.

Finding guys to face this offense is going to keep defensive coordinators up at night, and it won’t be because the teams Houston is facing aren’t good. But what defense has the numbers to stop three dominant receivers, a very good running back and two productive tight ends? The answer is very few.

Job grade: A

There’s not much else you can add to this group. They have two good top players and two others on the bench who can come in and contribute. Even though they didn’t need to add another tight end this year, they still did and it should work out pretty well for both sides. If this choice worries you, don’t be. He will be a very solid contributor to this team for a long time.
