According to the organization, a senior official in the Hamas-led government was killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City on Sunday.

Hamas said Ehab al-Ghussein, deputy labor minister, was among four people killed in an Israeli airstrike on the Holy Family School in Gaza City.

“Civil Defense teams in Gaza Governorate were able to rescue four martyrs and a number of injured after Israeli occupation aircraft attacked the Holy Family School, which houses a large number of displaced people west of Gaza City,” the Civil Defense Directorate said.

Al-Ghussein was 45 years old and had been deputy minister of labor in the Gaza Strip since 2020 and head of the emergency committee for the civil service in the northern Gaza Strip.

In May, his sister Muna Jamal and his wife Amani Sakeek were killed in an Israeli airstrike, according to reports at the time.

The Israeli military has said it carried out strikes in the area, targeting “a complex where terrorists operated and hid, near a school building in Gaza City.” It is not clear whether the attacks were the ones that killed a senior Hamas official.

It went on to say that “numerous steps have been taken to reduce the risk of harm to civilians, including the use of precise aerial surveillance and additional intelligence information.”

This came after another Israeli attack on a school in Gaza killed at least 16 Palestinians and injured 50 others, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry. CNN cannot independently verify the ministry’s figures.

The strike took place on Saturday at UNRWA’s Al-Jaouni school in al-Nuseirat camp in central Gaza. According to the Health Ministry, the school was housing displaced people.

The Israeli military said in a statement on Saturday that the militants were operating in buildings in the school district. CNN cannot independently verify the Israeli military’s claim.
