Woman in custody after allegedly attacking three police officers in Mesa

MESA, AZ (AZFamily) — Three police officers were allegedly attacked by a woman in Mesa on Saturday night.

Police responded to a burglary alarm at an apartment complex near Ext and Broadway Road around 10 p.m. When the officer arrived, she found a woman, later identified as 27-year-old Alaijia Yasmien James, outside the apartment. She initially said she did not live there.

Police said James attacked the officer as they approached.

According to court documents, James clenched her fist, clamped the car keys between her fingers and began punching the officer in the face.

The officer suffered injuries next to her eye, as well as to her cheek and neck. Her radio and watch were also damaged in the attack.

She called for backup and two more officers arrived. Police said officers tried to stun James with a Taser but were initially unsuccessful.

According to the documents, James scratched a second officer on the arm and kicked a third in the groin.

According to police, James was eventually taken into police custody after being tasered four times and handcuffed.

James was arrested on three counts of aggravated assault on police officers, aggravated assault with a weapon and criminal damage.

It was later discovered that she lived in the apartment where the original burglar alarm had been triggered.

She is still in the custody of the Mesa Police Department and has not been released to the Sheriff’s Office.

No further details have been released and the investigation is ongoing.
