Rockets host basketball events to celebrate Houston’s ‘713 Day’

In the United States, July 13 is just another hot day. But for residents of Houston and the surrounding area, it’s “713 Day,” the numbers representing the original area code created for the city in 1947.

With that in mind, in recent years the Houston Rockets have joined many of the city’s professional sports franchises in celebrating the day with special, free events related to their sport.

In 2024, week-long events include youth basketball clinics led by former Rockets players Calvin Murphy and DJ Augustin, as well as a girls-only clinic hosted by WNBA legend Cynthia Cooper.

The big event on Saturday, July 13 at the Fonde Community Center includes a 3-point shootout and a dunk contest, which will feature celebrity guest judges such as former point guard Rafer Alston.

Additional features include special performances and the Clutch City Beats recording studio, photo pop-ups and food trucks, the opportunity to purchase new “713 Day” merchandise at a pop-up team store and a chance to meet Rockets legends and celebrities.

Finally, on social media, fans can participate by using the hashtag #Rockets713. By doing so, each fan will receive a voucher for a future game at the discounted price of $7.13 per ticket. The same vouchers can also be obtained by donating school supplies.
