Laurens ten Dam and Thomas Dekker arrested for ‘indecent conduct’ in the US ahead of Unbound Gravel

The latest cycling adventure of ex-pros Laurens ten Dam and Thomas Dekker has been anything but smooth. During a training ride for the Unbound Gravel in Kansas, USA, the pair were arrested at lunch last week for “indecent behavior”.

About 24 hours after Dekker arrived in the United States, the cyclists were tied up in two police cars and taken to jail in Oklahoma, Ten Dam tells this in his podcast Live Slow Ride Fast. After a long and dusty training session, the cyclists wanted to have lunch at a local Mexican restaurant. So they decided to refresh themselves with some bottled water in the parking lot. However, this did not please a local who called the police to pick them up for their performance.

“After Thomas had washed me off, I quickly put my pants on between the car doors,” says Ten Dam. “While I was doing that, I heard someone shouting very angrily on the other side.” The man across the street didn’t like seeing too much of Dekker. A little later, Ten Dam and Dekker were arrested by police in the restaurant because they had been seen naked in the parking lot.

Due to the angry man’s accusation, both men were taken to jail in handcuffs. “The indictment said we were throwing water bottles at each other like two gay cyclists,” says Ten Dam. The cyclists had to pay $185 bail, but luckily were not summoned to court. Nevertheless, they spent more time in jail than they would have liked.
