Police arrest 20-year-old in sexual assault case at St. Clair College

Windsor police made an arrest this week following a report of a sexual assault at St. Clair College’s South Windsor campus.

Police, who released a photo of the alleged suspect on Thursday, said on Friday that a 20-year-old man had turned himself in.

The attack occurred on the night of April 1 on the college’s Talbot Road campus.

“On campus, an unknown man approached the victim, led her to a stairwell and sexually assaulted her. The woman left campus and later contacted police,” police said in a social media post on Thursday.

The arrested man is accused of sexual assault and deprivation of liberty.

St. Clair increases patrols

John Fairley, the school’s vice-president of communications and public relations, told CBC the school followed instructions from Windsor police and took action in response to the incident.

The college has spread the word through its online channels and reminds students of resources such as the Safe Walk Companion Program for people who have concerns about walking across campus or to their car at night.

“When we heard about the incident, we immediately increased patrols,” Fairley said before news of the arrest came.

The school also offers counseling and other services to help students in need.

“If there is something someone needs to talk about, or if there is an issue coming up in someone’s life that they need to talk about, we have a lot of services available on the college website,” he said.

He acknowledged that the school had been criticized for not making the incident public earlier, but said it had to follow appropriate procedures.

“It’s kind of a misconception that we didn’t do anything. We did a lot of things quietly… but until we were informed of the situation by Windsor police, we followed the guidelines.”
