EDENTON, NC (WAVY) — A wanted man threw baggies of cocaine from his vehicle while out on bail for another drug arrest in Edenton, police said.

Edenton Police Chief Henry King said Anthony Sawyer was able to escape after a chase Saturday that began around 7:50 a.m. on Virginia Road near the entrance to U.S. 17.

King says Sawyer drove south, failed to stop, and eventually threw several individually wrapped plastic bags of cocaine out the driver’s side window. Police called off the pursuit and began an investigation.

Police managed to obtain search warrants for possession of cocaine with intent to sell and deliver, driving without a license, ignoring blue lights and sirens, and violating a court order.

Sawyer was free on $20,000 bail following a separate incident on June 28 on North Broad Street. At that time, Sawyer was stopped for driving without a license, King says, and officers found an open bottle of beer, several individually wrapped baggies of crack cocaine, a baggie of powder cocaine, several individually wrapped baggies of morphine and several unidentified pills believed to be ecstasy.

King says Sawyer has been charged with driving without a license and drug offenses several times in the past.

Anyone with information on Sawyer’s whereabouts is asked to contact police.
