Two teenagers from Elk River killed, one seriously injured in accident in Big Lake

It is not known whether alcohol played a role in the accident, but officials said all of the boys were wearing seat belts.

BIG LAKE, Minnesota – The Minnesota State Patrol (MSP) reported that two teenagers were killed and a third seriously injured in a car crash in Big Lake early Saturday morning.

According to the report, a trooper was driving south on Highway 25 at around 2:45 a.m. when he passed a speeding BMW traveling north.

Officials said the officer then turned around to make a traffic stop, but instead came upon the accident scene, which involved only one vehicle, the BMW.

A preliminary investigation found that two 17-year-old boys, the driver and a passenger, were killed. Another passenger, a 17-year-old boy, was taken to HCMC with life-threatening injuries, according to the report.

MSP said all three boys lived in Elk River.

It is not known whether alcohol played a role in the accident, but officials said all of the boys were wearing seat belts.

The names of the victims have not yet been released.
