All English players are at risk of being banned for a yellow card against Switzerland in the semi-finals of the Euro 2024

England continue their fight for glory at the 2024 European Championships on Saturday evening when they face Switzerland in the quarter-finals in Düsseldorf.

With a place in the semi-finals at stake, Gareth Southgate has made tactical changes and is now using a three-man defense. Personnel changes have also been made: a change to his starting line-up had to be made due to Marc Guehi’s suspension.

The central defender received a yellow card in the group stage against Slovenia and in the last game against Slovakia. Two yellow cards mean a one-match ban for the European Championship – until this ban is lifted after the quarter-finals.

That means the game against Switzerland will be the last time a player will be banned for a match just for a yellow card. And five players are walking a fine line, knowing that if they get a card from referee Daniele Orsato and the Three Lions win the game, they will miss the semi-finals against the Netherlands or Turkey.

Of course, every player has to expect a suspension of at least one match. So a red card in the semi-final still means that he will miss the final – but not because he only receives a lot of yellow cards.

The five English players who face immediate suspension if they receive another yellow card include full-back Kieran Trippier and central midfielders Kobbie Mainoo And Conor Gallagher. Since the trio often find themselves in more combative positions or game situations, they are the ones who have to be most cautious – but two attackers are also only a yellow card away, with Phil Foden And Jude Bellingham Both had already registered for the tournament.

Switzerland, on the other hand, is in the same boat as England with five cautioned players: Dan Ndoye, Granit Xhaka, Remo Freuler, Ricardo Rodriguez and Vincent Sierro.

Silvan Widmer was already suspended, but the full-back is available again for the game in Düsseldorf.
