NS RCMP charges teacher with sexual abuse of student

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) has charged a teacher in Tatamagouche, New Nova Scotia, with sexual offences against at least one student.

Nicole MacLeod, 36, was arrested Tuesday and charged with sexual assault, sexual battery, enticement of a child and other offenses.

In a news release, the RCMP said it was contacted earlier in the day by Tatamagouche Regional Academy about alleged inappropriate contact by a teacher with a student who had been placed on leave a week earlier while the school investigated.

Tatamagouche Regional Academy is a combined elementary, middle and high school.

According to RCMP, MacLeod is accused of sexually assaulting a student on multiple occasions in May and June. The Murray Siding woman is also accused of sending explicit images to that student and “at least one other person,” the news release said.

“Whenever there is an incident where a teacher or authority figure is injured at school or in a location with multiple contacts with youth, we have to expect that there may be more victims and survivors of these assaults than have been reported to us,” Const. Mitch Thompson said in an interview.

Thompson encouraged people to contact police as victims.

“Let us offer the support that is available to us,” he said.

MacLeod is free on bail until her first court date in September. Her name has already been removed from the Tatamagouche Regional Academy staff roster.
