Five people, including suspect, killed after shooting at birthday party in Kentucky

FLORENCE, Kent. (NBC, KYMA/KECY) – A gunman opened fire at a birthday party in Northern Kentucky overnight, killing four people and wounding three others.

According to police, the shooter later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

According to Florence police, the shooting began at about 3:00 a.m. Eastern time when they received calls about an active shooter in a residence.

When they arrived, they found seven people shot. Four of them were pronounced dead at the scene, including a 44-year-old woman who had hosted the party for her 21-year-old son. Three others were taken to hospitals where they are in critical but stable condition.

The 20-year-old suspect led police on a chase that ended with him shooting himself and then driving into a ditch. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“We’ve never dealt with anything like this before. We know it happens all over the country. But this is the first time there’s been a mass shooting in Florence, so it’s very emotional,” said Chief Jeff Mallery of the Florence Police Department.

No word on what might have led to the shooting.
