10 boxers who attacked their opponents after the bell

Highlights

  • James Butler’s post-fight attack on Richard Grant resulted in a disqualification and a prison sentence.
  • Mairis Briedis’ elbow strike against Krzysztof Głowacki during a fight led to controversy and a rematch.
  • Roberto Duran’s alleged low blow against Ken Buchanan resulted in a victory by technical knockout

Boxing is a round-based sport where each fight is opened and ended with a gong. In the interests of sporting fairness, it is important that boxers only attack each other within 3 minutes between gongs. If this happens after the gong at the end of the round, the attacker may lose a round or the entire fight due to disqualification.

However, the hostility and animosity between fighters can reach a point where all rules are thrown out the window and even the sound of the final bell cannot stop them from attacking each other. Here are ten examples of boxers attacking their opponents after the bell rang, resulting in varying outcomes.

After 10 rounds, the two boxers waited for the judges’ decision. In the meantime, Butler asked his coach to take off his gloves. Grant was declared the winner and approached his opponent to shake his hand.

Butler delivered a devious right hook that ripped Grant’s mouth open. Butler was arrested for assault and spent four months in Rikers Island prison. Grant suffered a dislocated jaw and a lacerated tongue from the blow.

At the end of the 13th round, Duran did not hear the bell and continued his attack. This caused Buchanan to respond with his punches. Since the referee did not see the punch in question, he declared Duran the winner by technical knockout.

It was the second fight of Tyson’s return in 1999. This duel had been planned ten years earlier, but Tyson’s loss to “Douglas” Buster forced Norris to drop to cruiserweight, where he won the WBA title.

In 1996, Norris returned to the heavyweight division and the pairing was set.

However, the fight only lasted one round. After the bell sounded to end the fight, Tyson hit Norris with his left hand, sending him to the ground.

The two returned to their respectful corners, but Norris was unable to continue, claiming he suffered a knee injury from a poor landing. The fight was ruled a no contest.
