Cyclist dies while attempting to cross Lakeside Highway

A 52-year-old bicyclist was fatally struck Friday afternoon while attempting to cross State Route 67 in Lakeside, the California Highway Patrol said.

The man was traveling west in the southbound lanes of the highway around 3:50 p.m. when he was struck by a 2021 Chevrolet Trax near Maplewood Street, according to the CHP. The truck’s 32-year-old driver was unable to avoid the cyclist, who was pronounced dead at the scene, officials said.

Alcohol and drugs were probably not the cause of the accident, the CHP said, and the driver suffered no injuries.
