Man arrested for sexually assaulting woman in her UCLA dorm – NBC Los Angeles

An arrest was made after a female student was sexually assaulted on the UCLA campus early Friday.

Multiple sources familiar with the investigation told NBC News’ investigative unit that the person arrested was homeless.

Increased security measures were taken on the UCLA campus on Friday evening, with patrol cars stationed outside the dormitories.

The students were nervous because they learned that a man had broken into a dorm room in the middle of the night and sexually assaulted a girl.

“Many Bruins are angry with the university. They say they are here to protect us, but where is the protection?” says Chantal de la Cruz, who lives in the UCLA dorm.

De la Cruz has been living in the Saxon Suites dormitory for a year. When she woke up on Friday morning, she discovered that a fellow student had been sexually assaulted in the middle of the night.

“For example, other students participate in our group forums to learn what is happening and to ensure their safety and look out for each other,” De la Cruz said.

According to a UCLA crime alert, a man entered a female student’s dorm room around 2:40 a.m. and sexually assaulted her.

The victim described the man as white, in his 30s, of large build and with a curly beard. She said he was dressed all in black and wearing a beanie.

“It’s terrible, “It’s scary. For example, I just heard that someone climbed through a window and then something happened. But it’s terrible that something like this can happen in a school,” said Sophie Waldie, who lives in the UCLA dorm.

Police said they didn’t know how the man got in, but students told me the dorms didn’t have air conditioning, so almost everyone left their windows open at night.

“If you walk around, you will see that many students now have their windows closed,” De la Cruz said.

Campus police ask students to be vigilant, lock doors and windows, and report suspicious activity.

Student Harry Gallo said so many people are nervous that even he was reported to the police this morning.

“I was walking around near my dorm and looked “I was sitting at the window of my dorm room thinking about something that was going on at home, and sure enough, the police were called because people thought I might be trying to break into my own dorm,” Gallo said.

Some students are contacting the university and saying they have not felt safe on campus for months.

“Honestly, I’m really ashamed of the university because of the whole police situation last quarter, the camp and now this,” De la Cruz said.

Many high school and international students currently live there on summer programs, and some said they had not heard of the attack and never received a warning.

Anyone with information about the attack is asked to contact UCLA Police.
