Accident in LaGrange County leaves two dead and one seriously injured

LAGRANGE COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) – Two people were killed and another was seriously injured in an accident on State Road 9 south of LaGrange Wednesday.

According to the LaGrange County Sheriff’s Department, the accident occurred at 5:38 p.m. near the intersection of State Road 9 and County Road 200 S. A department news release said Phillip Shirmeyer, 77, of Wolcottville, was driving an SUV heading southeast when he crossed the center line and collided head-on with a northbound pickup truck.

The driver of the pickup, 62-year-old Dean Weir of LaGrange, said he noticed the SUV crossing the center line, so he braked and swerved to avoid the crash. Weir was flown to Parkview Medical Center in Fort Wayne, where he remains in critical condition.

Phillip Shirmeyer was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident. The SUV’s passenger, 70-year-old Sandra Shirmeyer, died on the flight to Parkview Regional Medical Center.
