2 dead in Mandeville after welfare check/police shooting

MANDEVILLE, Louisiana (WGNO) — The Saint Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office said Mandeville police were conducting a welfare check Friday night when a man shot a woman on Heavens Drive. Moments later, the man was shot and killed by a Mandeville Police Department officer.

While the original call was handled by Mandeville Police, the investigation into the police shooting is being conducted by STPSO at the request of MPD.

According to STPSO officials, Mandeville police were conducting a welfare check at a home in the 700 block of Heavens Drive when the officer heard a woman screaming inside the home. The woman then left the home and told the officer that a man who was inside the home was threatening to kill her. At that point, another man exited the home and shot the woman multiple times.

According to the STPSO, the Mandeville police officer also took cover and repeatedly ordered the man to drop the weapon. The officer also attempted to use non-lethal force by using a taser to stun the man, who then pointed the weapon at the officer. At that moment, the man was shot by a second MPD officer who arrived on the scene.

Both people who were shot died in the hospital. None of the officers were injured.

On Saturday morning, the sheriff’s office said the case was still under investigation and no further information was available at this time.
