Here’s what you need to know about the 18th annual Empty Bowls event in Houston

Empty Bowls Houston returns for the 18th annual event on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Empty Bowls is an international anti-hunger effort in Houston to benefit the Houston Food Bank.

Sean Crowl of the Houston Food Bank and Stacy Kuropata of Kuropottery and instructor at Third Coast Clay joined KPRC 2 News Today at 10 a.m. to learn more about the event. Stacy even gave a pottery demonstration. You can watch the full interview above.

Here is the event information:

  • When: Saturday May 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or until the soup runs out)

  • Or: Houston Contemporary Craft Center, 4848 Main Street

  • How much: The event is free, bowls for purchase start at $25

The unique luncheon fundraiser is a collaboration between Houston-area ceramicists, woodturners and artists working in all media and the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft. Since the event began, Empty Bowls Houston has raised $1,054,599 for the Houston Food Bank! (This is equivalent more than 3.16 million meals for the hungry!)

Attendees enjoy browsing more than 1,500 one-of-a-kind, handcrafted, handmade bowls. donated by Houston area ceramicists and artisans, who are available for a donation to the Houston Food Bank of $25 per bowl (100% goes to the Houston Food Bank). There are also larger bowls available at higher prices. Note: For every dollar donated to the Houston Food Bank, THREE meals are provided to hungry people, so every $25 bowl purchased provides 75 meals!

The event will take place at the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, both in the interior gallery spaces and in the outdoor garden. There will be outdoor artist demonstrations throughout the event and live music in the garden. All participants who purchase bowls will receive a simple soup for lunch.
