KZN man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping mentally disabled mother

The Ntuzuma Regional Court in KwaZulu-Natal heard that a man who repeatedly raped his mentally disabled biological mother showed no remorse for his actions.

The 31-year-old was sentenced to life imprisonment for the heinous crime.

National Prosecution Service (NPA) spokeswoman Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the man raped his mother several times.

Rape

“The man lived with his mother in the KwaMashu area and raped her for the first time in 2020. After that, he raped her frequently, almost daily. The plaintiff (his mother), who is mentally disabled, complained to the people around her, but no one paid any attention to her complaints.

“When her sister came to visit from another province, the plaintiff asked to go home with her because of the rapes. The sister then reported the incident to the police and the man was arrested after the plaintiff showed him,” said Ramkisson-Kara.

Ramkisson-Kara said that during the trial, prosecutor Lisa Abrahams took statements from the man’s mother and sister, as well as evidence from the J88 form and a report from a psychologist.

Proof

“In the plaintiff’s victim impact statement, supported by Court Preparation Officer Senziwe Mthethwa, the plaintiff said that the incident would haunt her for the rest of her life.

“She said she had to move because of her son’s actions and that he had shown no sign of remorse for what he had done to her. The man was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape and the court also ordered his name to be placed on the National Sex Offenders Register,” said Natasha Ramkisson-Kara.

The NPA welcomed the successful prosecution and said its mandate was to protect the most vulnerable in society.

“We praise the work of the public prosecutor and the police, which led to a conviction,” the NPA said.
