Another incident involving firearms at the MDC

Bernalillo County, NM – Shortly before 12:30 p.m. Friday, a correctional officer at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center was injured by a gunshot wound to the foot.

The incident occurred at the facility’s exterior security checkpoint, which is guarded by armed MDC correctional officers. The injured officer was taken to hospital for treatment. His condition is currently unknown.

The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) arrived on scene. Normal security operations at the MDC, including perimeter security, have resumed.

The incident was initially reported as an accidental discharge. No inmates, members of the public or other officials were involved in this incident.

This is the second time in a matter of months that a gun has been fired on the property. The other incident was a suicide attempt by a former MDC employee.
