An Opelousas native nearly died in a driving aggression incident near Baton Rouge

(KLFY)– A woman nearly died in a driving rage incident on I-110 near Baton Rouge; the Opelousas native shared her story and urged drivers to be careful.

She said the accident happened because a driver behind her thought she was driving too slowly.

“I just think he was angry at that moment. He was angry and that was his reaction. It’s scary that people can get so angry and do something like that and still drive. Because he never stopped,” said Candice Meyers.

Meyers said she was in the left lane of I-110. A driver was tailgating her, so she put on her turn signal and moved into the middle lane. Then the vehicle stopped right next to her, she said.

“I’m just not mobile. So I keep driving. I don’t know if that upset the driver of the vehicle or not, but at that point he takes his car and moves into my lane, forcing me to the right,” Meyers said.

Meyers lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the edge of the highway.

“This was a direct cause of someone’s actions. He wanted to do what he did,” she added.

Fortunately, Meyers only suffered scrapes and bruises in the accident, but she still can’t understand why the driver did what he did.

“You’re confused. You don’t understand that level of anger. There really has to be something wrong with the person because nothing I did… I felt like I was being polite the whole time. I put on my turn signal to show you I’m getting over it. I’m getting over it. I’m moving on. Nothing I did contributed to their behavior. I thought, thank God I didn’t look at you because who knows if I would have looked or reacted, it would have been a lot worse. So it was scary,” Meyers said.

Although Meyers is grateful to be alive, he is afraid of the consequences of road rage in the future.

“I don’t think he meant to kill me, but I think his outburst of anger and his behavior may have led to me being killed. So that’s what people realize when they need help. When the anger is so great that you can force someone off the road or even onto the street, how dangerous that is, then you really need to seek help,” she told News 10.
