NRC suspends Warri-Itakpe train service

Due to the poor condition of the line from Ujevwu in Delta State to Itakpe in Kogi State, the Nigerian Railway Corporation has suspended train services between Warri and Itakpe.

This was announced in a notice sent to clients, which stated that the agency intends to resume operations on Monday, July 8, 2024.

According to the NRC, the closure, which has been in effect since Friday, was attributed to an obstruction on the route.

“This is to officially inform our valued passengers that the Warri-Itakpe train will not run today, Friday, July 5, 2024 due to disruption on our route.

“We will resume our normal train services on Monday, July 8, 2024. Passengers who have already booked their tickets online will receive a refund,” it said.

One of the carriages of a train travelling from Itakpe in Kogi State to Ujevwu in Delta State derailed as it approached Abraka station at about 7.15pm on Thursday.

The passengers reportedly enjoyed a smooth ride until they reached a point near Abraka in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.

According to sources, frightened passengers jumped through the doors as the train slowed, dragging the derailed carriage with it, which then took the rest of the carriage with it.

However, no casualties were reported in the incident.

Recall that in October last year, the Federal Government launched the e-ticketing service for the Lagos-Ibadan and Itakpe-Warri railway lines. The aim of the service was to revolutionise the way passengers book and pay for their train tickets, eliminating the need for physical tickets or cash transactions.
