Dashcam video shows fireworks exploding on Dearborn Police patrol car

DEARBORN, Mich.Dearborn Police said they had to take cover when someone threw a lit firework at their patrol car.

The incident occurred on Thursday (July 4) during Independence Day celebrations.

On Friday, officials said they were searching for the person or group that targeted the officers.

Police are currently actively investigating this case and are preparing for another busy night.

During the Fourth of July celebration, there was an incredible dashcam video from the Dearborn Police Department.

“You can clearly see on the video the fireworks land under the patrol car,” said Dearborn Police Corporal Dan Bartok. “It explodes, then there’s a big flash that’s so powerful it shakes and moves the patrol car.”

Fortunately, the officers were not injured when they were attacked near Fordson High School in East Dearborn.

“Officers were extremely busy responding to numerous complaints, and while they were there, this incident occurred,” Bartok said.

Local 4 showed Dearborn residents the video of the incidents that happened with police on July 4. They said the incident was sad because the police were protecting people.

“We actually do this for Independence Day, not to do things like this, but just to have fun,” said one resident.

On Independence Day alone, Dearborn Police responded to over 200 emergency calls.

Police are preparing for another busy night and will be sending extra officers on patrol with fireworks, which are legally permitted until 11:45 p.m.

“We will not tolerate acts of violence against our police officers and will use all means to find the people who attacked our officers,” Bartok said.

Anyone with information is asked to call Dearborn Police. Dearborn Police also remind people that minors are not allowed to use fireworks and parents or guardians will be fined if caught.
