July 4th shooting involving a deputy under investigation

NEW PHILADELPHIA (WJER) (July 5, 2024) – The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation is investigating an incident on the evening of July 4 in which two Tuscarawas County Sheriff’s officers shot and killed a Wainwright man who allegedly pointed a gun at them on his property.

According to a news release from Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell, no one else was injured in the shooting, which occurred around 9:30 p.m. in the 1900 block of Wainwright Road. The 41-year-old man who was shot was struck in the arm and leg and taken to Aultman Hospital with injuries that were considered non-life-threatening.

Campbell says it started when a neighbor called 911 because an intoxicated man was apparently firing a gun at his own home, where his wife and children were.

The press release states that officers found the suspect in his garage – the garage door was open. He could be seen holding a gun.

Campbell says the suspect was then shot because he ignored orders to drop the weapon and instead pointed it at officers. He says officers then recovered the weapon and began first aid, which included applying a tourniquet and bandaging his wounds until paramedics arrived.

The suspect’s name is not currently being released.
