Report: Sean “Diddy” Combs subject of federal criminal investigation

Sean “Diddy” Combs is reportedly the target of a federal criminal investigation into sex trafficking allegations.

Accordingly NBC NewsThe music mogul’s legal team was notified last week by federal authorities in the Southern District of New York that he was the focus of an ongoing investigation, according to two sources familiar with Combs’ recent legal troubles.

The same insiders claim that a federal grand jury is currently hearing evidence as part of the investigation, but there is no confirmation yet that any formal charges will be filed.

Representatives for Combs did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

News of an alleged investigation into Combs, 54, follows another sex trafficking and assault lawsuit filed against him on Wednesday, July 3. According to court documents obtained by PEOPLE, former porn star Adria English claimed the producer sexually harassed and sex-trafficked her for years during “white parties” he hired her for at his residences in the Hamptons, New York and Miami.

Jonathan Davis, an attorney for Combs, responded to the new allegations in a statement to PEOPLE, saying, “No matter how many lawsuits are filed, it will not change the fact that Mr. Combs has never sexually harassed anyone or been a victim of sex trafficking.”

“We live in a world where anyone can file a lawsuit for any reason and without evidence,” the attorney continued. “Fortunately, there is a fair and impartial legal process to find out the truth, and Mr. Combs is confident that he will prevail in court against these and other unsubstantiated claims.”

At least six other people have sued Combs since his ex-girlfriend, singer Cassie (real name Casandra Ventura), filed a high-profile lawsuit against him in November accusing him of rap, sex trafficking and domestic violence. All of the plaintiffs have claimed the rapper either sexually assaulted or harassed them at some point.

In December, Combs denied all allegations against him in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH,” he said. “Over the past few weeks, I have stood by in silence as people have attempted to destroy my reputation and my legacy.”

Six months later, surveillance video from 2016 surfaced showing Combs physically assaulting his ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura at a Century City hotel, consistent with allegations in her now-settled lawsuit. The musician addressed the footage in a now-deleted Instagram video, admitting to being “disgusted” by his actions.

“It’s so hard to reflect on the darkest times in life, but sometimes you have to,” he said. “I was devastated. I mean, I was at rock bottom. But I’m not making any excuses. My behavior in that video is inexcusable.”

Combs added that he takes “full responsibility for my actions in this video” and concluded by saying he “is not asking for forgiveness” and that he is “sincerely sorry.”

Since then, the “I’ll Be Missing You” singer has been stripped of several titles, including his key to New York City and his honorary doctorate from Howard University – both of which he has returned – as well as his role as majority owner of the media company he founded, Revolt, after he sold all of his shares.

According to TMZ, Combs has also put his Los Angeles mansion – the same one that was raided by federal agents in March – up for sale for $70 million.
