2 minors arrested in Southington are said to have broken into vehicles

On Friday morning, Southington police officers were dispatched to the Laning Street area on reports of active car break-ins.

SOUTHINGTON, Connecticut – Two minors were arrested in Southington early Friday morning after allegedly breaking into several vehicles, according to Southington police.

At approximately 5:21 a.m., police were dispatched to the Laning Street area after receiving a report of car thefts. Police said that while searching the area of ​​the Days Inn hotel at 30 Laning Street and the Kenmore Apartments at 78 Laning Street, an officer heard voices coming from the rear of 48 Laning Street.

The officer allegedly observed two male teenagers committing car thefts, according to police. When the officer identified himself, both suspects attempted to flee on foot and ran toward Interstate 84, police said.

After a police pursuit, one suspect was quickly apprehended; a cordon was set up and officers found the second suspect hiding in a wooded area, police said. One of the suspects allegedly had a screwdriver, which he had presumably used to try to break into nearby vehicles.

Police said further investigation revealed that the suspects had broken into or attempted to break into four vehicles in the area. Police said a side window was smashed in one of the vehicles.

Both minors were arrested. The person who allegedly possessed the screwdriver is charged with two counts of attempted third-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools and obstructing an officer, police said.

According to police, the other minor is charged with two counts of attempted third-degree burglary, two counts of third-degree burglary and obstruction of justice.

The minor who allegedly had the screwdriver received a juvenile summons and is scheduled to appear in New Haven Juvenile Court next Thursday, police said. The other teen also received a juvenile summons and is scheduled to appear in Waterbury Juvenile Court next Thursday. Police said both minors have been released to their respective legal guardians.
