Man hospitalized after shark attack at New Smyrna Beach in Florida

A 21-year-old Ohio man was bitten by a shark on a Florida beach on July 4.

According to the Daytona Beach News-Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, it happened Thursday afternoon in New Smyrna Beach in Volusia County.

Tammy Malphurs, interim director of Beach Safety Ocean Rescue, said the man was playing soccer in knee-deep water when the shark bit him on the right foot.

The man’s injuries were not life-threatening and he was taken to a nearby hospital for further treatment. No further information was available.

According to Malphurs, this is the third shark bite reported in Volusia County this year.

There were also reports of incidents in Texas on July 4

This incident in New Smyrna Beach occurred on the same day as two people were bitten by a shark on South Padre Island, Texas. The victims were taken to the hospital for their injuries.

Two other people had encounters with sharks but did not suffer serious injuries. Officials said the incidents were “a very rare occurrence.”

Florida leads the United States in shark attacks

Volusia County is commonly known as the “Shark Bite Capital of the World” due to the high number of incidents. In general, Florida, with its 1,300 miles of coastline, leads the country in shark attacks. Last month, three people were injured in shark attacks on the same day.
