Police say a bystander was killed in a shooting in Hartford

A woman died and a man was injured in a shootout between two groups of people early this morning, Hartford police said Friday.

Shamyria Williams, 23, of Hartford, was an innocent bystander when she was struck by gunfire while sitting in her car near 60 Cleveland Street, police said.

“She had nothing to do with any of this,” Lt. Aaron Boisvert told reporters Friday. “Very sad, disturbing. This should not have happened.”

Police did not release the name of the injured man, who was also identified as a passerby.

Boisvert said HPD has identified three people who may be considered suspects in connection with the shooting.

Williams is Hartford’s 10th murder victim in 2024, Boisvert said, noting that the city experienced a relative lull in murders over the summer, with no murders reported in June.

“That ended last night,” he said. “Let’s hope it was just limited to the Fourth of July weekend. We’ll see.”

The department on Friday also investigated a double shooting that occurred Thursday night on Seymour Street. In that incident, two men were treated for gunshot wounds at a local hospital.
