CCFR training captain killed in ‘off-duty boating accident’ in Crystal River

CRYSTAL RIVER, Fla. – A Citrus County Fire Rescue (CCFR) instructor was killed in an off-duty boating accident in Crystal River on July 4.

According to officials, 42-year-old Michael Fletcher was a “valued training officer” who served the CCFR for six years and the Marion County Fire Rescue for approximately 20 years.

No details are available about the cause of that night’s incident. According to CCFR, Fletcher trained firefighters to maintain safety and service standards.

“Captain Michael Fletcher was a pillar of our department, known for his dedication and compassion,” Fire Chief Craig Stevens said in a news release. “His loss will be deeply mourned by all who had the privilege of working with him.”

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of a Citrus County citizen, Captain Michael Fletcher,” added County Administrator Steve Howard. “I extend my deepest and most sincere condolences to Captain Fletcher’s family and every member of Citrus County Fire Rescue for the loss of a brother.”
