Jude Bellingham has to pay a 30,000 euro fine for a gesture and is suspended for one game | Jude Bellingham

Jude Bellingham will play against Switzerland on Saturday after being fined €30,000 (£25,400) and given a one-match suspended ban by UEFA for his offensive gesture following England’s dramatic equaliser against Slovakia.

Bellingham was shown on television kissing his right hand before grabbing his crotch. He said it was “an inside joke to some close friends who were at the game” and was in no way aimed at the Slovakian bench.

UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body found him guilty of “breach of the fundamental rules of good conduct” and said of his suspension, which applies to all matches under its jurisdiction: “This suspension will not be enforced immediately and will be subject to a probationary period of one year starting from the date of the present decision.”

UEFA fined the football association €10,000 for disturbing the peace and €1,000 for English fans setting off fireworks at the same match.

All 26 England players trained on Friday ahead of Saturday’s quarter-final. Gareth Southgate is expected to switch to a back three and must decide whether to start Luke Shaw, who has not played since February with a thigh injury. Bukayo Saka is his other option at left-back and either Kieran Trippier or Trent Alexander-Arnold are expected to play at right-back.

UEFA has banned the Turkish player Merih Demiral for two matches because of a politically motivated “wolf celebration”. After scoring his second goal in Turkey’s round of 16 victory over Austria, Demiral imitated a wolf’s head with his fingers. The gesture is associated with the far-right nationalist group “Grey Wolves”.

UEFA said he was being punished “for failing to comply with the general principles of conduct, violating the basic rules of decent behaviour, abusing sporting events for demonstrations of a non-sporting nature and bringing the reputation of football into disrepute”.

Demiral and the Turkish government defended the gesture as a normal expression of patriotic pride. The Turkish ambassador to Germany was summoned to the Foreign Ministry in Berlin because of the salute.
