Kill a mockingbird

Details: You have several chances this weekend to catch the Broadway run of Aaron Sorkin’s symphonic adaptation of To kill Mockingbird. Harper Lee’s enduring novel offers a new perspective in this searing, sensitive and often hilarious production, starring Emmy Award winner Richard Thomas as Atticus Finch, with Morehouse alumnus Yaegel Welch , as the falsely accused Tom Robinson. The cast also includes Mary Badham, who was nominated for an Academy Award for her role as Scout in the 1962 film. This is a must-see play for any lover of literature or theater.

OMG Hip-Hop Food Festival

Details: Whether you are more of a foodie or more of a music addict, you will find what you are looking for at this unique gastronomic festival. Local chefs will prepare all kinds of small bites, while a series of DJs and bands will complement your snack with classics of rap, R&B, old school and hip-hop beats. It’s going to be a busy day at Atlantic Station – consider taking a carpool or taking MARTA to Arts Center station, where a shuttle goes directly to Atlantic Station.

Atlanta BeltLine Lantern Parade
When: Saturday May 11
Or: Westside BeltLine (parade starts at Adair Park)
Cost: Free
Details: Returning for the fourteenth year, this beloved parade lights up the night from Adair Park to Lee & White. You’ll see more than a hundred official lantern puppets, along with several hundred more homemade lanterns created by community members, and enjoy five marching bands as the parade moves along the Westside BeltLine. You can enjoy the parade from the sidelines or participate in the march yourself (light accessories encouraged). The parade ends at the Lee & White Resort, where the party wraps up late with live music, food and celebrations. The parade starts at 8:45 p.m., but forget about the kids’ bedtime for one night: they’ll remember the magic forever.

Atlanta Photography Center Block Party and Exhibition
When: Saturday May 11, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Or: Edgewood Avenue
Cost: Free
Details: Enjoy the best of Atlanta’s historic Edgewood Avenue alongside works by some of the city’s most talented artists at this community arts event. The long-running photography organization has teamed up with other Edgewood Ave businesses. for a day of music, art, food and community gathering. Check out the work of local artists at the ACP Project Lab, grab a drink at the happy hour sponsored by Marcus Bar and Grille, and enter a drawing for prizes from Dad’s Garage, Staplehouse, and Chrome Yellow. Kids (and adults!) will enjoy face painting by local artist William Downs.
