Punjab Shiv Sena leader attacked with swords on busy road, critical condition

Even a policeman accompanying him for security could not stop a group of men from attacking a Punjab Shiv Sena leader with swords in the middle of a busy street in Ludhiana on Friday, allegedly because of his controversial comments against Sikhs.

A video of the incident shows two “Nihangs” – members of a Sikh warrior sect who usually dress in blue and carry traditional weapons – brutally attacking Shiv Sena leader Sandeep Thapar, while a third, with the help of others, holds the police officer at bay.

The leader is seen riding a scooter while the policeman is sitting pillion when he is attacked by two assailants. They are talking and Mr Thapar is seen folding his hands, but one of the men starts attacking him with a sword that appears to be blunt. When the policeman tries to intervene, he is dragged to the side of the road by a third man.

The first man repeatedly hits Mr Thapar in the face and neck with the weapon while people in the vehicles behind him back away. Mr Thapar loses his balance and falls onto the road with the scooter when he is attacked by the second man. While he sits on the road with a bloody shirt, the two men drive away on his scooter.

The Shiv Sena leader was taken to a hospital where his condition is reportedly critical.

According to police sources, Mr Thapar was returning from attending a trust event and the Nihangs attacked him because they were angry over his controversial comments against the Sikhs.

Ludhiana Deputy Commissioner of Police Jaskaran Singh Teja said a case had been registered, the accused had been identified and would be arrested soon.

Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur has attacked the AAP-led government in Punjab, saying the incident was indicative of a breakdown of law and order.

Ms Kaur posted a video of the attack on X and wrote: “I have just received a report of an extremely disturbing incident in Ludhiana where a person was attacked with swords despite being accompanied by security forces. The manner in which such violent attacks are carried out in broad daylight in crowded areas indicates a complete breakdown of law and order in Punjab. CM @BhagwantMann should wake up from his slumber and take immediate remedial action.”
