Fort Worth, Texas: Police respond to deadly overnight shooting

Several people were shot overnight during Independence Day celebrations in Fort Worth, police said.

FORT WORTH, Texas – Fort Worth police responded to numerous calls overnight about shootings in which several people were shot and at least two people died.

The first crime scene occurred in the Castleman Street area and another on Eastland Street in southeast Fort Worth. That crime scene spans more than four blocks and at least one person died in that incident, police told WFAA. According to Fort Worth police, people in the area were celebrating the Fourth of July and a “chaotic scene” ended with fatal shootings.

The first 911 call reported a man suffering a heart attack, but when officers arrived on the scene, motorists were doing doughnuts and fireworks were being set off in the intersection. Police said several people were shot, but did not provide an exact number. A witness WFAA spoke to said it was difficult to distinguish between gunshots and fireworks.

“I just heard bangs and saw people running,” the witness said. “I don’t know what’s going on… I think it’s another firework.”

Fort Worth police said they were not sure why a gun was drawn or what led to the shooting, but patrols in the area had already been increased because a crowd was expected.

Police also responded to a shooting at a car wash in southwest Fort Worth. That shooting occurred on West Cleburne Road. One person was killed in that shooting as well, but the details of that shooting are unclear at this time. Fort Worth police said they will issue a statement on that shooting soon.
