Man dies in fireworks accident; CFD fights fire near illegal fireworks

A fireworks accident on July 4 left one man dead and the Chicago Fire Department battling a major fire on North Kostner Avenue in Belmont Gardens.

CHICAGO (WLS) — A man was killed in the northwest part of the city and the Chicago Fire Department is battling fires that are believed to be caused by the use of illegal fireworks on the Fourth of July.

A 34-year-old man was injured while handling a firework in the 3000 block of North Kostner Avenue in Belmont Gardens at 10 p.m. Thursday and died at the scene, Chicago police said.

The detectives of Area Five are investigating.

And Chicago firefighters had to contend with a series of fires that appeared to be caused by fireworks.

A video from Englewood shows several fires on the street, presumably caused by people setting off fireworks.

Another video shows firefighters battling a large house fire in the 6000 block of West Honore Street.

It was not immediately clear whether anyone was injured.
