10-year-old boy on bicycle killed by fleeing driver in West Harris County

KATY, Texas – A young boy died Thursday night after investigators in West Harris County collided with him and even dragged his bicycle for a short time as they fled the scene of the accident.

According to Captain Marcus Kinnard-Bing of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office’s Vehicular Crimes Unit, it happened just before 11 p.m. on July 4. Officers found the unidentified 10-year-old boy lying in the middle of the intersection of Windy Stone and Concord Green in Katy.

Preliminary information from Captain Kinnard-Bing is the SUV driver was traveling northbound on Concord Green before striking the young boy on his bicycle. The driver failed to stop and fled the scene while the bicycle was still underneath the SUV.

The little boy was flown by rescue helicopter to a trauma center, where, according to Captain Kinnard-Bing, he succumbed to his injuries a few moments later.

It is unclear what the child was doing outside at the time or whether he or she was supervised by an adult.

Meanwhile, investigators were able to locate the motorcycle at the corner of Greenhouse and Keith Harrow, just half a mile from the accident scene.

To assist in their investigation, officers are currently reviewing close-up surveillance footage, as it may contain evidence of the driver detaching the bike from the SUV.

At the time of this writing, no further information has been released, but the fleeing driver is still at large and faces a charge of failure to render aid.
