Suspect arrested for sexual assault in Riga / Article

On Friday, June 28, the State Police received information from the family of an underage girl that on that day an unknown man had attacked the girl and committed sexual acts on her in the Ķengarags residential area of ​​Riga. After receiving this information, the State Police launched an investigation and search for the alleged perpetrator.

State police obtained video footage of the suspected perpetrator and images of it were distributed in the media to urge people who recognized him to come forward. State police also conducted an extensive survey of local residents and took other operational measures.

Thanks to the active informants of local residents, the police were able to identify the suspected sex offender and determine his whereabouts.

On Monday, July 1, he was arrested by police in Riga. The arrested man was born in 2003 and has previous convictions for sexual offenses and property crimes.

Police did not disclose the victim’s age, but said the girl was under 14.

Local residents told Latvian television that the crime took place in broad daylight in a stairwell.

In connection with the incident, criminal proceedings were initiated for an act of a sexual nature aimed at satisfying sexual desire through physical contact with the victim’s body, when committed by taking advantage of the victim’s helplessness or against his or her will, by using force, threats or by exploiting trust, authority or other influence over the victim, when committed with a person under the age of 16. For this offense, the law provides for a prison sentence of five to 15 years and probationary supervision of up to five years.

On Wednesday, July 3, the court ordered the suspect to be remanded in custody.
