CS Kuria asks PSC to suspend recruitment to cut expenses » Capital News

NAIROBI, Kenya, July 5 – Cabinet Secretary to the Public Service Moses Kuria has called for a suspension of new and ongoing recruitment in the public service, describing it as a crucial measure to control runaway recurrent expenditure and align with the government-wide austerity measures.

According to Moses Kuria, current spending on salaries, allowances and social benefits for civil servants exceeds sustainable levels, putting a strain on already scarce resources and preventing their allocation to essential national priorities.

“In view of the expected budget cuts as part of the ongoing fiscal rationalisation, I therefore urge you to halt all new recruitment as well as all ongoing and pending recruitment,” he noted.

Kuria also announced that the government would conduct an audit of all public payrolls and clean them up during the suspension.

“In the meantime, the government will set up a tripartite committee comprising representatives from various ministries to evaluate ongoing recruitment initiatives to ensure compliance with the public sector wage bill reduction policy,” he said.

“Any future recruitment in the public sector must be justified by genuine operational needs,” he added.
